World Food day by AICRP women in agriculture on 16.10.25

Food is the third most basic thing for life after air and water. World Food Day is an international day celebrated worldwide every year on 16th October to commemorate the date of the founding of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization in 1945. World Food Day was established by FAOs member countries at the organization's 20th general conference in November 1979. The Hungarian Delegation led by its then Minister of Agriculture and Food Dr. Pal Romany played an active role at the 20th session of FAO conference and suggested the idea of celebrating this day worldwide. It has since been observed every year in more than 150 countries, raising awareness of the issues behind poverty and hunger. Since 1981, World Food Day has adopted a different theme each year in order to highlight areas needed for action and provide a common focus. FAO issued World Food Day medals each year to commemorate and promote the anniversary. The theme for this year is “Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future”. As part of World Food Day on 16.10.2025 AICRP on Women in Agriculture organized a training programme at Government High School, Thondapally (V), Shamshabad (M) with scientists Dr. Jessie Suneetha W and Dr. G. Swarupa Rani and Dr. R. Neela Rani, Unit Coordinator to school children, high school teachers, Anganwadi teachers, pregnant women, adolescent girls, and farm women from the community. The gathering was addressed on importance of adolescent girls’ health with balanced nutrition and hygiene. Also, pregnant women were advised to include nutritious and safe food in their diets. The need for incorporating millets into the daily diet for their rich nutrient content and health benefits were also explained along with need for food handling practices including the cleaning of vegetables and fruits to ensure safe foods. The importance of establishing kitchen gardens as a sustainable way to enhance household food security was promoted and. The event successfully brought together scientists, educators, health professionals, and community members to work towards a shared goal of improving the health and well-being of women and children in rural areas. The collaborative efforts of the AICRP – WIA team along with local health and education departments for informative and impactful suggestions to participants for better food and nutrition practices in their daily lives.
