The ICAR–Indian Institute of Maize Research (IIMR), Ludhiana, in collaboration with Professor Jayashankar Telangana Agricultural University (PJTAU), Hyderabad, organized a one-day workshop on “Maize Production: Challenges and Opportunities in India” on 09 January, 2026 at ICAR–NAARM, Hyderabad, with support from Bayer Crop Science. During the inaugural session, Dr H. S. Jat, Director, ICAR-IIMR, highlighted major constraints limiting maize productivity in India, emphasizing weed infestation as a critical yield-reducing factor. He drew attention to the emerging threat of Rottboellia cochinchinensis (itch grass) in major maize-growing regions and stressed the need for developing effective and sustainable management strategies. Dr. D. Bhadru, Principal Scientist (Maize & Millets), presented the status of maize production in Telangana and discussed key challenges faced by farmers, particularly weed management and Fall Armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) infestation. Representatives from Bayer Crop Science (Dr. Mohan Babu and Dr. Rajvir Rathi) shared insights on a herbicide under evaluation for effective control of itch grass. Scientists from ICAR, SAUs, and the private sector engaged in technical discussions. During technical discussions Dr. R. Susheela, Principal Scientist (Agro) & Head, MRU, Hyderabad highlighted the major constraints faced by Maize growing farmers due to Rottboellia cochinchinensis. The programme concluded with interactive deliberations and field visits highlighting science-led solutions for strengthening India’s maize production system.
