Science to Soil: NSS Special Camp Activities (Day 4) at Agricultural College, Aswaraopet on 01-03-2026

Agricultural College, Aswaraopet successfully conducted the fourth day (01/03/2026) of the National Service Scheme (NSS) Special Camp under the leadership of Associate Dean Dr. J. Hemantha Kumar, focusing on connecting scientific knowledge with real field practices. Farmers were trained on soil moisture assessment using tensiometers and the “feel-and-appearance” method, along with guidance on the critical stages of irrigation to ensure proper watering, prevent yield loss, and conserve water resources. Students also visited a Suryamandala model to understand multi-tier cropping systems and engaged in knowledge exchange with farmers, blending traditional wisdom with modern agricultural practices. The programme highlighted sustainable agriculture through demonstrations on preparing organic microbial boosters such as Panchagavya, Ghana Jeevamrutham, and Drava Jeevamrutham to improve soil fertility and reduce chemical fertilizer use. Activities also included chemical safety awareness, proper pesticide spraying practices, and the removal of the invasive weed Parthenium (Vayyari Bhama). The day concluded with a visit to tobacco farmers to observe the Flue-Cured Virginia (FCV) curing process, where students learned about quality control, grading, and market value. The initiative was successfully organized by NSS Programme Officers D. Sravanthi, Dr. A. Srijan, and Dr. P. Jhansi Rani, strengthening student–farmer collaboration and promoting sustainable, scientific agriculture.
